I think you need to activate the code and then deactivate it before progressing in the game (even saving and loading works), I did that at the beginning of the game and received the Bracers Book, Cooking Book and Monster Book with no problems...

EDIT: I also sold all the blanks and dummy items from the inventory to clean it up and free some space, that may also have helped...
