FPS hiccups...
When Playing a game I often get hiccups in FPS. Meaning that my frame rate will go down suddenly pausing the game for half a second then get back up to full speed. This happens A LOT especially in Kingdom Hearts BBS. Its rather annoying to say the least. Is there a fix for this?

PC specs
I5 3570 4.5ghz
2GB 6950
8GB DDR3

Thank you

RE: FPS hiccups...
Hello, fade2black001.

Hiccups can be caused by many factors. Almost all of which can be eliminated thanks to your system specs, which are overkill for this emulator.

Except for perhaps, Texture Scaling. Do you have it set to some excessive value like 5x Hybrid/Bicubic etc.?

Also, just in case, check to see whether your GPU is clocking itself up appropriately for the emulator. I've had reports from some other AMD/ATI GPU users that their GPUs aren't going into performance clocks for the application, especially for the 64bit version of the emulator. Which ultimately results in lower than expected performance for systems easily capable of handling the program.

You can check this out by using a GPU monitoring program like GPUz:-

Thanks for your time.

RE: FPS hiccups...
Yes those are my graphic settings. Is that bad? Can my PC somehow not handle that? After running the game for a little bit here is what my GPU-Z readings look like.

I thank you for your time for helping me.

RE: FPS hiccups...
The way we do texture scaling currently isn't the most efficient, so hiccups are to be expected if you're using 5x (it has 'overkill/insane' on it for a reason Smile). Try turning it down to like 2x or 3x and seeing if it still stutters.

@fade2black001
From your posted GPUz screenshot, your GPU is clocking itself up normally, so that's not the issue.

As for your graphics settings, try lowering down Texture Scaling to 3x perhaps. That should help in reducing the FPS hiccups. It has nothing to do with how powerful your system is, it's just the nature of how the option operates, so don't worry about it.

You can keep everything else (like Rendering Resolution, etc. ) at maximum. As an added bonue, your VRAM usage (which looks really high in that GPUz) should also drop to much more reasonable levels.

EDIT:- Beaten by TheDax. I was here first mate. Tongue

RE: FPS hiccups...
Changing that seems to have fixed it. MAybe as time goes and with newer versions it will get better. But honestly I notice hardly any difference from 3x to 5x anyways.

Thank you for your help

RE: FPS hiccups...
Well, we currently use multiple cores to perform texture scaling, etc. It could be improved by allowing the texture to be shown at the original resolution and scaling asynchronously, although there's some complication in this. Also it might look bad in some games for things to pop into detail after a moment...

But just to mention - the setting is exponential (since it multiplies height and width, and textures are always square.) 3x is 9 times as much work and memory from your GPU and CPU. 5x is 25 times.
