I don't know, there might be some weird game out there on the PSP that can let you play multiplayer on the same console, one player using the d-pad and the other the buttons. Something like a 2d hokey game maybe, or pong. I have seen the DS doing it in some games.

There's one I know of: Puyo Puyo 7. It has one player use the Dpad to move their puyos on the left half of the screen, and the other player uses the face buttons on the right, and both players then use L/R to confirm stuff.
