Armored Core series is in english and it is all about giant robots, Carnage Heart EXA was released as well, but it's not a typical game, more like an "AI" programming-learning;3.

Primary reason games like Gundam or Macross doesn't have english version is typical for those series copyrights/licenses messup, the huge and early piracy problem of the psp in the west didn't exactly helped either;p.

As for fan translations it's most likely more about the mecha action games being playable without being able to read any of the text which can't be said about VN/RPG's.
