I think desktop drivers are already usually pretty good, at least in comparison to mobile.

It's definitely not impossible, for certain areas / games (for example, maybe it would help situations like God of War by reducing per-vertex overhead - *MAYBE* but not likely, or Tales of Phantasia X which actually runs faster in Direct3D 9 than OpenGL for me.)

By the way, it's also not impossible that we'll do a bunch of work to get Vulkan working, and it'll be slower, everywhere - even on mobile... and we'll find out we have to do a ton of work to even get to where the OpenGL drivers were. There's no sure thing yet, the API isn't even out yet.
