I think you don't need root access to use the application, just for some funtions, that you really don't need.

It's a little hard to understand the program but you can get use to it quickly, and is a paid app.

A quick guide:

Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, Settings -> Quick Settings-> BT Controller to Xperia Play.
After this back -> customize Gamepad, and pres te buton of the virtual key and a menu appear change the input press the phisycal key and repeat this with the 4-6 button.

Once you make sure that it works, return to settings and save the profile.
