Stuck at save screen in Birth by Sleep

So, I started having this problem halfway through playing the game where if I went to a save point the game would freeze at the "Checking media storage" screen.

At the time, I just decided I would just live with it and save using save states instead.

This worked fine until I beat the game...now I can't proceed at all without having to save and it just gets completely stuck at the "Checking media storage" screen. The game won't freeze, but just won't ever go past that screen.

Is this any way around this? =\
