Game ID wanted: Dungeon, boss battle in circular room - Solved: The Akuma Hunters...
I'm trying to identify another PSP game I saw in a video and can't remember the name of. I'll describe what I remember, although I'm not 100% sure of the details.

It was a third person game and I believe the player character was female (or maybe the game allowed you to pick the sex of the character). I think there was a part where they were fighting monsters in a dungeon hallway, but I think that was a very small part of the game. I don't really recall any exploration, just them going down a corridor, turning a corner, going down another corridor, etc. In other words, there was just one way to go.

The bulk of the game seemed to be a boss battle against creatures in a large, circular room. There were pillars around the room that could be used for cover, with maybe a slightly raised walkway around the edge of the room. I think there was one, or maybe two main monsters and I think lesser creatures would spawn in as a distraction. I think the player had a sword and some type of projectile weapon, or maybe some form of magic power that would gradually recharge over time. Also, I think that the only way they were able to actually kill the enemies was to hit them enough times to stun them, then run over and deliver a finishing move, otherwise I think they just got back up and continued fighting.

I think there were also powerups hidden in destructible boxes that the player could break.

I remember that one of the creatures they were fighting was some kind of winged demon that would fly up to the ceiling.

I don't remember if it was in English, but in my mind, I recall it having a sort of Japanese Anime type style to it, serious, not cutesy.

Does this ring any bells for anyone?

And no, it's not either of the God of Wars games, or the Soul Reaver games for the PS1.

Thanks, but is there another Gurumin that doesn't have a cutesy art style?

The game I'm thinking of looked more like Lord of Arcana, except that it's not that game. Originally I thought it was, but after watching a video of it, it doesn't match what I remember. All the battles in LoA take place in open arenas surrounded by an invisible wall. In the game I'm looking for, all the battles took place in an actual room. It's not the remake, Lord of Apocalypse either.

It's also not any of the Monster Hunter or God Eater games, although they do have a somewhat similar style.

So think Lord of Arcana, but in an actual round room rather than big open arenas.

No, I'm sure it's not Lord of Arcana, or Lord of Apocalypse.

I made the following image to illustrate what I remember. I shouldn't have to say this, but I feel that I have to; No part of this image is taken from the actual game that I'm searching for, it is made up of elements I found on the net that RESEMBLE what I remember. Please don't look at the warrior and say "That's Soul Calibur Legends!" No, the warrior was cropped from Soul Calibur Legends. The demon was cropped from a Castlevania picture. The room and pillars were stock photos.

I think the ceiling in the center was domed, or at least much higher than the edge of the room, but I didn't know how to draw a dome in the opening. I think there were a couple steps in the back of the room, possibly leading to a door, but I'm not sure about that. I think there were also some breakable crates against the wall, but again, I'm not sure. The floor between the pillars and the wall may have been slightly raised, like a walkway. I think the player character was female (or maybe the game gave you a choice) and of course the outer wall went all the way around. I just happened to use an image that gave a cut-away view.

Naturally, the colors, textures and scale are probably all wrong, and the actual game would have had a lot more detail. I'm not exactly an artist and I didn't want to spend hours creating something that looked like an actual screenshot. I just wanted to make something that would give people an impression of the kind of game it was.

Things I'm sure of: Third-person game, action-oriented, battle with a winged creature in a circular stone room with pillars around the edge, magic or ranged attack that recharges, creatures had to be killed with a finishing move.

Additionally, I think the video was a playthrough or at least it started from the beginning, so this would have been relatively close to the start of the game.

Again I want to stress that this is a 100% FAKE image that I created out of random parts for illustration purposes only.

Yes! I just watched a video of it and that's definitely the game I was looking for. Thank you! Smile

Just out of curiosity, did my illustration help ID it?

Well, frankly I knew what it could be before the illustration, it's just that I saw it during a break at work and couldn't remember exact title before coming home.

The simple series overall might not be well known outside of japan which is a shame considering it has quite a few very fun games and doesn't absolutely require japanese to enjoy, they are low budget through, so probably not for everyone.

I see that some of them were released in other countries under different names.

It's too bad that so many of the PSP games never got translated to English. In particular it seems virtually none of the games with any kind of giant robots ever get translated. Also, it seems strange that fan translators will make patches for RPG and visual novel games with practically a book's length of text in them, but won't do things like the Macross and Gundam games which probably have 1/10 the amount of text. Huh

Anyway, thanks again. Smile

Armored Core series is in english and it is all about giant robots, Carnage Heart EXA was released as well, but it's not a typical game, more like an "AI" programming-learning;3.

Primary reason games like Gundam or Macross doesn't have english version is typical for those series copyrights/licenses messup, the huge and early piracy problem of the psp in the west didn't exactly helped either;p.

As for fan translations it's most likely more about the mecha action games being playable without being able to read any of the text which can't be said about VN/RPG's.

Also one of the more annoying things about fan translating a game is extracting and eventually patching in the text. The tools needed to extract and patch text in visual novels and even some RPGs are much simpler then the ones needed to patch a lot of action games, without breaking everything else.

I knew about those games, but never knew they were by a Japanese developer.

And yet both Gundam and Macross anime have been released outside Japan, in their original forms with English subtitles.

Maybe, but the games are still confusing when you can't understand any of the mission briefings or any of the in-mission orders. Are you supposed to be attacking those large ships, or protecting them? Where am I supposed to go in the city? Am I supposed to pick something up and take it somewhere? Why did I just fail the mission?
