Honestly, I have no idea.
The new languages were added in v0.7.6 or thereabouts which killed all the VRAM on the first-generation devices like yours. By v0.9 I finally removed these languages and regained the VRAM but performance never came back.

Which builds did you try by the way? Make sure you try 0.9.5-410 or higher. I fixed a bug which was causing crashes in that one.

In the release version, I may have added some personal speedhacks (such as modifying timing). I forgot about them after v0.7.5 as I didn't think they were helping and we had the whole 'VRAM issue'.
