When I put the shifter into gear 1, it stays in gear 1... BUT, I want xpadder to think I am pressing Key A one time and letting it go, or "tapping" it. I don't want the keyboard key held down. How do you do this?

I think you have to check the advanced options :
1°) Click on the key you want to assign.
2°) Click on the "Advanced..." button on the new window.
3°) Try the options in the new window
