If the problem affects savedata and potentially started by incorrectly named characters, maybe just remove them?

I mean this game doesn't really make a good "role playing game" as it allows deleting and creating player characters at will and doesn't have any character developement either, so you could use that, remove glitched ones&create new ones(with proper names;p) then use cwcheats to easily rush through the boss fight.

No guarantees it would help, but might be worth trying, and starting from last savepoint before the boss it wouldn't take much time since there's an exit point right there also with cheats even low level characters could easily kill a dragon / or be leveled very fast.
