Installed SDL2 (and updated to OSX Yosemite) and it doesn't seem to change anything. And now I have to go to a New Years dinner, so I guess this mystery stays unsolved for now...
Well, I appreciate the suggestions - let me know if you think of any other possible fixes. And if anyone else has resolved this problem with a similar build, please let us know! I'd love to play this game!
