In most games, the game can't tell. It's similar to the game being put on hold via the PSP, PSP Go, or Vita.
However, in those implementations, you can never go back - and if you start the game over it wipes the savestate. So you can potentially run into issues if you do any of: * Save in game (even autosave) and then load a savestate from before that save. * Create a new game from the start, and then load a savestate. * Delete any savedata and then load a savestate from when it existed. In some games, this will cause an error message saying that the memory stick the game was started with was removed and needs to be put back in.
