Final Fantasy II

I'm having the worst time of my life trying to get this game to run. On the one hand there's the audio crackle and fuzziness that pops up a lot and isn't too intruding but just sounds unenjoyable I've also got horrendous slowdown in the first town, and I'm assuming other towns, so I haven't really played further (speed is around 10-15 fps).

I'm really curious as to how people have configured this game to run smoothly, because no matter the settings I apply, nothing seems to make it any better than running with those two aforementioned issues
