For the record, you can turn off the autosave function, and not save when it prompts you to (when you leave options). The autosave function is in the middle of the Options screen (the bottom right ball, first sub-ball).

I haven't fully tested it (as in, I don't know how it would affect gameplay when you go from School mode to to Campaign(?) mode). In other words, the bottom middle ball to the top middle ball, since the game encourages you to play school mode to "make your own character" first.

Given the track record it probably will hang.

Campaign mode should still be playable all things considered, by using the default characters. Just use savestates (and cry when it starts crashing, which it will. save often~)

Amendment:
Playing on School mode and then transitioning to Campaign mode will cause hanging, because there needs to be saving. So you're limited to playing campaign mode. Meh.
