It is still 8.1, but when you mention 8.1 without a version, it implies 8.1 official, meaning 8.1-1, which had no support for this game. 
Also, are you running the emulator from Program Files or something? Missing fonts in the MH series are generally caused by running it from Program Files or some directory where you have no permissions to write files. That, or the flash0/font folder is missing.
And yeah, I don't like the new Back behaviour either. It was nice when it both opened and closed the emulator UI at once.
