Actually, kerrigor, you don't have to disable the 360 controller.
I play MHFU a lot too (as you can discern from my tag), and the solution I used is just to map the DPad to the currently unused Right Anologue stick of my 360 contoller using XPadder. The Right stick is currently unused in the Controller config screen if you haven't noticed it already. Works just perfect. Dual Analogue monster hunter FTW.
