trying to sync ppsspp savedata between android and steam deck

TL;DR
For some reason, can't seem to copy saves into the /home/deck/.var/app/org.ppsspp.PPSSPP/config/ppsspp/PSP/SAVEDATA folder

I'm attempting to use syncthings to keep my psp stuff sync'd between my s21 ultra and my steam deck

syncing the rom folder (which you can select the location) works just fine

syncthing happily copies roms back and forth

but since savedata and ppsspp-savestate have specific spots, I can't seem to copy anything to the steam deck

other linux distributions seem to work just fine. android works fine, windows works fine

just not steam deck

any idea what I'm missing here?
