Brave Story performs effects that are slow. If you don't want the slowness, check "Disable slow effects" in the settings. This may mean you stop seeing cutscenes, but you can toggle it at runtime.

Also, some things in the battle, such as the enemies, are rendering better, but it sounds like you're not very concerned about that.
