Does is possible apply a patch for real shadows on emulator?

I saw some videos on Youtube that is possible apply in old games, like NFS Most Wanted PC, in this MOD also had HD textures. But I know that the texture is possible only if modifying the game. But I want to know if is possible apply only the real shadows, like the new games, on emulator? Is possible make many others things in graphics, why shadows not? And I know that it will be heavy if possible, and have others important things to make. But is just a idea.
