playstation series emulator names
I've become curious about playstation series emulators' names. You know, there are epsxe(ps1), pcsx2(ps2), jpcsp(psp), and rpcs3(ps3). Many famous emulators have 5 charactered names. Is there a reason for it?

RE: playstation series emulator names
PS1:
ePSXe = emulator + PSX + emulator.
*PCSX = PC + PSX => PCSX-R = PCSX Reloaded.

PS2:
*PCSX2 = PCSX + 2. The X doesn't really belong but is kept due to branding - the same team created both emulators.

PSP:
-JPCSP = Java + PCSX + PSP.
PPSSPP = PSP + PSP.

PS3:
-RPSC3 = Recompiler + PSCX + PS3.

As you can see, most of the emulators share the "PCSX" name due to mostly historic reasons, and using the "brand" to promote new emulators. As far as I know, for an example, there is no direct connection between PCSX/PCSX2 and JPCSP/RPCS3, though each of those groups has mostly the same team members.
PPSSPP is an outlier to that trend, and ePSXe was an original competitor - so it didn't really have a trend to follow.

The more you know.

RE: playstation series emulator names
ePSXe actually stood for: enhanced psx emulator. At least that's what I remember.

RE: playstation series emulator names
if you want more useless knowledge PSX is actually different console than 1st playstation console which we call psx or ps1

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_(video_game_console)

and as for the name lengths its just luck

most emulators developers try to short name of emus as much as they can leaving cool sound to them

like

snes > zsnes
wonder swan > oswan
dream cast > demul

but there are lot more exceptions

nintendo ds > desmume
nes > virtua nes\fcultra\rocknes
snes > snes9x
nintendo 64 > p64 or project 64

there is no real pattern here if u wonder just coincidence

Try AntiMicro graphical program used to map keyboard keys and mouse controls to a gamepad/controller.

RE: playstation series emulator names
Thank you for replying to a useless question. So using 5 characters wasn't from any special reasons after all.
