RE: Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions Texture Pack
Thanks for coming back to me
No worries I’m playing on the Xbox version so using the latest build

The problem with the upscale is that if use this at 2x or anything above I get a flickering of the font and the onscreen image which is really annoying sadly.

Wish there way another way to visualise it but your pack is great.

Quote:so instead of stuttering they should be appearing in at the speed of which your storage device is ready

Just to clarify that's not really true.
The textures appear at the speed they get loaded into gpu memory.

Which isn't limited just by storage device speed, but also includes your gpu memory bandwidth and hardware performance overall, when not using texture format that's immediately supported by GPU(differs per platform so not that great) also transcoding speed(not much of a problem with the new ktx2 format) and how much the texture takes in memory(again much better with ktx2).

That would mean the font texture changes every frame, maybe even it's not even about font texture, but game drawing a text texture adding letter by letter which from emulator point of view is just new texture every frame, if the CPU is not strong enough to do it in real time within frame budget, it get's flickery. With Vulkan backend we have an additional hardware texture scalers that given good enough gpu can work in real time quite well, but I guess that's not available

Thanks for the detailed write up but I've got a question. I've purposely left some textures as pngs because they were smaller in size to their ktx2 counterpart so I thought that would mean they loaded quicker. Should I convert them even with the file size increase?

RE: Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions Texture Pack
See PNG as a container for compressed image and even if the image would compress better than texture resulting in smaller size, once it finishes it'll be a full size texture.
Meanwhile ktx2 is a lossy Basis or UASTC compressed texture format, so memory wise it's actually much smaller texture and will load faster.

If you really want to show love and have time to tweak stuff you might consider using lower quality basis ktx2 files (remove "-uastc" when converting to get basis) for textures that aren't in the center of attention as the thing with most textures is they don't need full quality to look very nice, you can also skip "-mipmap" for UI stuff and other textures that doesn't benefit from having mipmaps as it also add's to final texture size.
Finally if you really see a quality difference in something that is really important to look as perfect as you made it and it makes you cringe to see that one or few pixels in slightly different color than you planned, you might consider using zim format. It's much larger file size and the texture size is as with png's - full, but it's still like 3 times faster to load than PNG's.

Personally through I don't think it's worth your time fine tuning especially with ktx2 in UASTC with mipmaps for everything works really nice on it's own even in quite laggy packs.
