Latest version for Raspberry Pi?

I'm having a lot of trouble finding this out, so maybe I'm overlooking something simple, but I'm trying to update PPSSPP on my Raspberry Pi (3 B+). RetroArch explicitly downloads and installs 1.5.4, and I can't seem to find anything that says why it targets that version, or how to get it to install a newer version, or how to manually install a newer version.

Is there a way to install 1.7.x on the Raspberry Pi, and if so, how do I do it? Any help on this would be appreciated.

To explain this simply:

As of right now, only the Windows and Android versions are kept up-to-date by the lead developers.
If you want one of the other versions (iOS, Raspberry Pi, MacOS, Linux, etc) to be up-to-date, you will have to compile it yourself using the source code found on the GitHub.

You can compile the latest git builds on Raspberry Pi without any issues. See these notes:

It may be faster if you cross compile using a laptop or desktop, but I don't recommend this unless you have Linux running on said desktop/laptop.
