OTG Cable

Forgive me for asking this question as I'm not into the tech scene that well but is there a difference from an OTG cable versus a usb cable? Meaning, if I were to try and plug my wired pc xbox controller into a female port and then plug it into the phone, would it work or is an OTG cable needed?

U need an otg cable to plug any USB device into your phone...

I've got an old USB joystick I bought back in 2006 and it works well
I don't think u can plug a USB into an android phone without an otg cable...

I've got one lying around and it doesn't work on my phone so I was curious if it had to be an OTG cable or if that qualifies or not.
