Snapdragon 810 low performance? - spiwar - 04-29-2016 04:52 AM

I recently upgrade to the HTC One M9 from the Xperia Z1. The HTC device has the snapdragon 810 processor while the Z1 has S800.

My problem is why is the performance on the M9 so slow???

When I used my Z1, I can run Project Diva Extend with the 60fps hack at 1080p easily with some drops on a few songs.

The same situation cannot be said with the M9. It constantly drops under 60fps (mid 40s-50s) and since the game is tied to the framerate it is basically unplayable with the M9. I know it's not related to the overheating since I have modded my M9 and it stays relatively cool most of the time.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem? Or at least explain to me why this happens?

The m9 cant stay cool without downclocking, if it stays cool you took away its performance in order for it to stay cool.
I have an lg g flex 2 and it runs well after modding, but gets very hot.
Ppsspp runs good when modding the thermal settings of the device so 1 big core always stays on and barely throttles and the gpu barely throttles.

the problem is, I have modded my M9 with improved thermal paste, and I have tried different thermal configurations, only 1 big cores active like you mentioned, but it still slows down. In an extreme situation I test the m9 with an ice cube behind it's back and i'm sure it's pretty cool yet the game is still running slow.

EDIT: It doesn't matter anymore, turns out the 810 and the 808 is a piece of crap, and 800 + 801 is way better for PPSSPP.
Traded my M9 for a xiaomi mi note and the game runs 60fps perfectly smooth now

You should research the spec first XD

what exactly do you mean?

Does this CPU have problem? Does this GPU have problem? Stuff like that

Again, you did not read the post, I have already researched the m9 before purchase and after modding it is one hell of a beast, everything is smooth and fluid and battery temp never goes over 43 degree celsius, games like asphalt 8 and marvel future fight runs smoothly and only PPSSPP gave me problems.

Most Snapdragons are having bad performance on emulators and games because of high temps, bad optimization and poor drivers of Adreno GPUs, that's why I didn't buy a new phone yet (I'm with my warrior Galaxy SII for almost 4 years), most phones today are Snapdragon, I'll only change for another Exynos or anything else.

Thats because it an actual game, not an emulator. Emulating is more demanding

Then can you explain why, under normal condition, with absolutely little to zero thermal throttlling, the s810 lags behind compared to the s801?

The most likely scenario is that the SOC is not using the Fast Cores and only using the slow cores for PPSSPP. There are tools that you can use to check. Unfortunately, it's a power saving feature that SOC vendors like to use.

Hmm, this is rather interesting.I'll look into it when I get my hands on another 808 or 810 based device. Even if it is the problem, is their any solutions to the emulator to use the A57 cores instead of the slower A53?

RE: Snapdragon 810 low performance? - TkSilver - 05-22-2016 05:27 PM

Rooting the device and completely rewriting the kernal that the device manufacturer is using and realizing that it will not be the ideal way the device was designed to run since the manufacturers do spend millions of dollars developing their code along side their devices.

Unfortunately they do not see emulator users as a demographic that is worth designing a device and kernal for. So most phones are no built to handle large amounts of processing on the faster cores for extended periods of time, since that is not a use case that is common in most users everyday lives.

That's the problem of having too many cores... Apple's CPUs are great for emulator because it doesnt have many cores yet their single core perfoemance is top notch. PPSSPP is still not multithreaded, so the benefits of having more cores and threads isn't there yet.
Luckily qualcomm this year went back to quad core and improved single core performance on the 820, so at least we know that the 820 wont be a flop for ppsspp like the 810 or 808 did.
