Maxwell 970m vs Pascal ??? - milkydude12 - 03-16-2016 01:21 PM

So ive bickered for some time now, i7 4770k vs i7 6700HQ, Weather to get Eurocom, Egpu solutions etc. I've now boiled it down to one final question. Should I wait for pascal as its rumored to be x2 faster then Maxwell OR do i suck it up and get a laptop with a GTX 970m (6gb). My current laptop is 100% dead right now, as a result i've been using a macbook for all my work needs, however for my gaming needs it leaves much to be desired.

I want to know your guy's thoughts on the subject.

Thanks Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Well the first and most important question is do you absolutely have to have a laptop?

If you do, are you willing to to wait possibly a year or slightly more for Pascal based GPUs to be made mobile?

Personally unless you travel a lot, and can not survive the trips with out some full gaming, I would recomend a desktop over a laptop. Even if we ignore the ability to upgrade the desktop (due to laptops getting eGPU/ other recent changes), then there is still the undeniable fact that you could either get the same performance for a lot less money or vastly (more then 2x) improve performance for the same price.

If you must have a laptop then honestly no one has enough information yet on chips that do not even exist yet to give a very accurate answer. Also only you know how much theoretical performance you are willing to give up for how much possible length of time it will take to get a new mobile gpu line.

Hi TkSilver, it absolutely has to be a laptop, im never home long enough to actully justify buying a desktop. (the desktop in my signature has been sold for that exact reason). I've only got time to wait 2 months as I really need a new laptop as my old one has died. I've been doign some research and I believe if I do go with maxwell, ill put a little bit more $$$ and get the GTX 980m (8gb).

If it is 2 months you will never see Pascal then.

Also eGPU tech might not be a viable option for you if your not home much due to it looking like most if not all seem to need to be connected to an external monitor.

If you want massive performance then sager, asus, and a few other manufacturers have put together some laptops with full gtx 980s (not 980m) in them most with a desktop intel i7 cpu as well. The sager np9870 manages to tame this beast of a combo (VR ready to boot) without massive thermal issues or a water cooling solution like I believe asus went with.

Custom Egpu solutions, yes they require an external monitor, however i think i might take a gamble with the Razer Core, as it seems thats plug and play and utilizes the internal monitor.

I personally would rather spend the $1,000 or so extra the razer core (dock+ gpu), to pick up one of the desktop GTX 980 laptops instead, but to each their own.

My issue with the razer laptop is that it is fixed at 8gb of ram .... and the razer blade has 16 gb of ram however theres no slot for a 2.5 drive .... I need a least 2 TB for all my games and .... other stuff Tongue
